The Death of Ken Green PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Clayton

Ken Green first joined Barnsley Cricket Club in the late 1940’s. He has held a variety of posts within the club and had been a member of the committee for at least 50 years. His enthusiasm was boundless and he was always the first at any meetings in his last role of President of the club. Ken laid the first brick in our half million pound pavilion project and was there when the last one was laid 12 months and several hundred bacon sandwiches later [Ken was the chef as well]. Despite the loss of his wife a few years ago and failing health Ken continued in his role as Mr. Barnsley Cricket Club and woe betide anyone who stepped out of line.

A keen bowler and supporter of Barnsley Football and Rugby Clubs, Ken passed away on Tuesday morning 31 August, leaving son David and daughter Julie and their respective families.

A good innings – well played sir!! (Funeral arrangements to follow...)

Supplementary Competition Semi Final
(Match Report by Paul Jackson)

Rockingham 332-7  v  Hunslet Nelson 133.

Rockingham Colliery Cricket Club booked their place in the Yorkshire Council Play Off final after an emphatic 189 run win against Central Yorkshire League opposition Hunslett Nelson.

Electing to bat first Rockingham skipper Andy Moore elected to use the aggressive James Doran as opener to make full use of the 15 over fielding restrictions. The pace of the innings was set after 14 runs were scored off the first over and openers Doran and Michael Brown had scored 65 runs from the first 10 overs. Indeed when Brown (37) fell attempting a 2nd maximum in consecutive balls Rockingham had scored 91 in just 14 overs. Ben Dalton joined Doran at the crease and whilst Dalton built his innings Doran let loose at the other end whilst somewhat strangely continuing to be the victim of the Hunslett banter. The pair shared a partnership of 158 runs in just 21 overs when Dalton left for 57 as Rock began to attempt to accelerate their innings at 249 for 2 with still 11 overs remaining. Doran continued to score at a brisk pace and was supported well by a quick fire knock from Billy Murray (24) including a self predicted maximum off his first ball. The pair had moved the score on to 294 before Murray's exit and Doran's innings came to end for a magnificent 152. His knock coming in just 109 balls and including 19 fours and 4 sixes, Mark Wilkinson added a quick fire 25 and Rockingham's innings ended with 322 for 6 off their 45 overs. Will Stiff took 3-55 for Hunslett.

Hunslett would need to score quickly form the off and their innings got off to a bad start when Steve Taylor removed opener McIntosh in the first over. When Rockingham's new stumper Richard Skipworth took a superb diving catch to remove captain Tom Roy off Taylor's bowling Hunslett were in early trouble. Wickets continued to tumble as Taylor claimed his third and Ben Dalton chipped in with two (2-22) as Hunslett were in real trouble at 56-5. Some hard hitting from Will Stiff (32) brought some respectability to the Hunslett score but when he became Andy Shore's (2-45) 2nd victim courtesy of a good low catch from Michael Brown it was left to Steve Taylor to clean up the innings with a further two wickets to claim a five wicket haul (5-37) and send the Rock through to the final.

Rockingham will play Mirfield CC of the Central Yorkshire League in Sundays final at Beverley CC 12pm start.

Pakistan Flood Appeal Raffle PDF Print E-mail
Written by Richard Tong

PLEASE PLEASE HELP

Unless you have been on planet Zog you will all be aware of the disaster that is unfolding in Pakistan, Each evening we see desperate pictures on the News bulletins as we sit in the comfort of our lounge. The recovery will take many years and much support from around the world. I would like to see us do our bit. I have managed to get my hands on a top of the range bat from Kookaburra Reader and I am now organising a bat raffle.

There are 110 boxes on my raffle board and I am asking for a fiver a box.......more if you wish. Please give me a call and select your box. I can arrange to meet up to collect the fivers or you can send me a cheque. Make your cheques payable to The South Yorkshire Cricket League and write the word APPEAL on the back of the cheque.

It is the kids that I realy feel for so the monies raised will be donated to the Save the Children branch of the appeal. I know a fiver is a lot but just have a couple less pints over this weekend and you will have it covered. Once all the monies are in I will advise one and all of the draw / presentation details. THANKYOU.
